1.Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Line patty pans with the paper cases.
2.Make cake according to directions on packet. Drop 2 level tablespoons of the mixture into each paper case, bake about 20 minutes. Stand cakes in pans 5 minutes, turn, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
3.Divide fluffy mock cream frosting evenly between two small bowls. Tint one bowl white, tint the remaining bowl black. Spread tops of 12 cakes with white frosting, spread remaining cakes with black frosting.
4.Using picture as a guide, pipe clefs and notes onto cakes using white and black gels. Position cakes on prepared board; secure with a little frosting.

5.Combine milk, the water and sugar in small saucepan, stir over low heat, without boiling, until sugar is dissolved.
6.Sprinkle gelatine over extra water in cup, add to pan, stir syrup until gelatine is dissolved. Cool mixture to room temperature.
7.Beat butter and extract in small bowl with electric mixer until as white as possible. While motor is operating, gradually pour in cold syrup, beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Mixture will thicken on standing.

Equipment: 2 x 12-hole (2-tablespoons/40ml) deep flat-based patty pans 24 standard paper cases (brown) 40cm-square prepared cake board decorations white and black decorating gel The recipe makes 24 cakes, however, we’ve only used 17 in our picture. Encourage the guests to bring their instruments, if possible, to a musically-themed party. A white board would make a perfect background for this cake, use a black marker to draw the lines.
