Orange syrup

Method

1.Preheat oven to moderate, 180°C. Lightly grease and line a 20cm square cake pan with baking paper.
2.Place fruit in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Boil 2 hours or until tender. Drain well and discard pips. In a food processor, process oranges until smooth. Repeat with lemons. Place in separate bowls.
3.In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat eggs and sugar together 4-5 minutes. Fold in almond meal and baking powder. Fold half almond mixture through orange and remaining half through lemon. Pour orange mixture into pan and bake 20 minutes.
4.Remove from oven and pour lemon batter on top. Reduce oven to moderately slow, 160°C, and bake a further 50-55 minutes. Cool in pan 20 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.
5.To make Orange Syrup; combine sugar, water and juice in medium saucepan. Cook over low heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil. Add orange slices. Boil, uncovered, 10-15 minutes, until syrup thickens slightly.
6.Serve cake drizzled with syrup and topped with orange slices. Accompany with whipped cream.
