Celebrate eight with this gorgeous yellow birthday cake decorated with edible orange flowers.

Method

1.Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Grease and line two 20cm (8-inch) ring pans.
2.Make cake according to directions on packet. Divide mixture between pans; bake about 35 minutes. Stand cakes in pans 5 minutes; turn, top-side up, onto wire rack to cool.
3.Meanwhile, to make butter cream, beat butter in small bowl with electric mixer until as white as possible. Beat in sifted icing sugar and milk, in two batches. Tint butter cream yellow.
4.Using serrated knife, level cake tops so cakes are the same height. Trim a shallow arc from one cake.
5.Assemble cake pieces on board, cut-side down, to form number eight; discard remaining cake. Spread butter cream all over cake.
6.Arrange boiled lollies and Smarties on cake for flowers.
