Method

1.Preheat oven to 190°C. Grease a baking tray.
2.Process oats until fine. Combine oats, flours, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, sugar, dates, walnuts and 1 teaspoon salt in a large bowl.
3.Stir in buttermilk until mixture forms a ball. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead into a 28cm loaf. Using a small knife, make five 1cm-deep slashes across top of loaf. Place on prepared tray. Bake for 1 hour.
4.Wrap in a clean tea towel to cool, so bread remains moist. Cut into thick slices and serve with butter.
