Chocolate and banana french toasties

A quick and easy light meal or snack for little people ... who might also be persuaded to help in the kitchen for this one!

Chocolate and banana french toasties
  • 1 small unsliced loaf white bread, ends trimmed
  • 2/3 cup (220g) chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 3 small ripe bananas, thinly sliced
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) skim milk
  • 50 gram unsalted butter, chopped
  • icing sugar, to dust

    Cut 4 x 3cm-thick slices from bread (reserve leftover bread for another use). Cut a deep pocket into one side of each piece of bread (not all the way through). Spread pockets with chocolate spread. Fill with banana.

    Whisk eggs and milk in a shallow bowl.

    Melt 20g of butter in a small frying pan on medium heat. Dip a filled piece of bread into milk mixture and turn to coat. Cook for l-2 minutes each side, until golden brown and heated through. Transfer to a plate. Cut in half diagonally.

    Repeat with remaining sandwiches and milk mixture, reheating pan and melting remaining butter between each toastie when necessary. Dust toasties with icing sugar and serve.
