Bolognese sauce

The traditional Italian meat and pasta sauce, bolognese is one of the must-know recipes in everyone's cooking vocabulary. Toss this hearty sauce through beautiful fresh spaghetti to create a tasty dinner the whole family will love.

Bolognese sauce
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 rasher bacon, rind removed, finely chopped
  • 2 clove garlic, crushed
  • 500 gram beef mince
  • 100 gram mushrooms, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 400 gram can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • 500 gram cooked pasta of choice, to serve
  • shaved parmesan, to serve


Bolognese sauce

    Heat oil in a large frying pan on medium. Saute onion, bacon and garlic 3-4 minutes, until tender.

    Increase heat to high. Add mince. Cook 5-6 minutes, until browned, breaking up lumps as it cooks. Add mushrooms and paste. Cook, stirring, 1-2 minutes.

    Mix in tomatoes and wine. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, 10-15 minutes (adding a little water if it becomes too thick). Season to taste and stir parsley through.

    Toss sauce through drained pasta. Serve topped with shaved parmesan.
