Beef mince patty schnitzel with mash and gravy

A family favourite gets even more budget-friendly with this beef mince schnitzel recipe. Serve with creamy potato mash and gravy for a delicious weeknight meal the whole family will love

  • 750 gram beef mince
  • 1/2 cup sage and onion stuffing mix
  • 75 gram cheddar cheese, cut into 4 cubes
  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 2 eggs, whisked
  • 60 gram packet potato chips, crushed
  • 3/4 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup white sesame seeds
  • oil for shallow-frying
  • gravy, steamed broccolini to serve
Creamy potato mash
  • 1 kilogram Desiree potatoes
  • 4 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 1/3 cup pouring cream
  • 40 gram butter

    In a bowl, combine mince and stuffing mix. Divide into 4 equal portions. Form each into an oval shape. Make an indent in centre of each and push in a cheese cube.

    Lightly coat each patty in flour. Dip into egg, then press into combined chips, crumbs and sesame seeds to coat. Place on a tray and chill for 20 minutes.

    For the creamy potato mash: In a large saucepan of boiling, salted water, cook potatoes and garlic for 10 minutes. Drain, return to saucepan, then mash with cream and butter until smooth. Season and keep warm.

    In a large frying pan, heat oil on high. Cook schnitzel for 4-5 minutes each side until golden and cooked. Drain ona paper towel. Serve with mash, gravy and broccolini.


  • Lamb, pork or chicken mince also work well in this recipe.
