I love spending an afternoon getting lost in the kitchen, although I know this is not always the case for everyone. By creating small and simple daily habits in the kitchen, you may find that they transform cooking into an effortless and joyful part of your day. Here are a few simple tips for making your time in the kitchen a little more enjoyable.

1. Start with an empty dishwasher, empty sink and clean bench.

This simple suggestion helps to ensure you don’t have piles of dirty dishes piled up in the early stages of cooking.

2. Clean as you go.

Scrubbing dishes doesn’t have to be a tedious or unpleasant endeavour. Next time you are washing the dishes, feel the warm and soothing water on your hands, enjoy the tickle of little bubbles, and take notice of how calming and relaxing this process can be.

3. Simplify and de-clutter your space.

I have a habit of collecting vintage knick-knacks that sit on my kitchen windowsill. What I have learned is that too much clutter (no matter how pretty it is) can make a kitchen feel untidy and claustrophobic. Clear benchtops can be invigorating and inspiring. Having a clear out every couple of months does wonders!

4. Wear an apron, particularly one with pockets.

Aprons can help to protect your clothing from food splatters, burns and stains. They are also very useful for drying hands, opening jars, and wiping up a quick spill.

5. Maximise your time in the kitchen.

If you feel inspired to whip up a batch of cookies on Sunday morning, you might as well make two. That way you can freeze the second batch for quick and easy afternoon snacks. You will thank yourself later in the week.

6. Invest in a good blender.

Over the past few years, I have adapted many of my recipes to be able to throw into the blender to help limit fuss and mess in the kitchen. Blender pancakes are a winner in our kitchen (great for the kids, but also very healthy, containing equal quantities of oats, egg and ripe banana).

7. Brighten your kitchen with fresh flowers or indoor plants.

Not only do they look beautiful, they also help to naturally purify the air of toxins and create a relaxing and restful ambience.

8. Last but not least, don’t forget a little background music.

Popping on your favourite artist or playlist to set the mood is almost as important as the delicious meal you have planned and the ingredients you use.
